Heist Society

Ally Carter – 3.5 Books – Disney-Hyperion – Published 2010, 2011, 2013

The Heist Society series begins with Heist Society.

When Katarina Bishop was three, her parents took her on a trip to the Louvre…to case it. For her seventh birthday, Katarina and her Uncle Eddie traveled to Austria…to steal the crown jewels. When Kat turned fifteen, she planned a con of her own—scamming her way into the best boarding school in the country, determined to leave the family business behind. Unfortunately, leaving “the life” for a normal life proves harder than she’d expected.

Soon, Kat’s friend and former co-conspirator, Hale, appears out of nowhere to bring Kat back into the world she tried so hard to escape. But he has a good reason: a powerful mobster has been robbed of his priceless art collection and wants to retrieve it. Only a master thief could have pulled this job, and Kat’s father isn’t just on the suspect list, he is the list. Caught between Interpol and a far more deadly enemy, Kat’s dad needs her help.

For Kat, there is only one solution: track down the paintings and steal them back. So what if it’s a spectacularly impossible job? She’s got two weeks, a teenage crew, and hopefully just enough talent to pull off the biggest heist in her family’s history–and, with any luck, steal her life back along the way.

14 days, 6 countries, five paintings. I loved this book. It is exciting, clever and downright addictive. So once you’ve read it you will want to move straight onto book 2, Uncommon Criminals.

Uncommon criminals

This time, Kat and her crew are asked to return a famous (and cursed) emerald to its rightful owners. Mayhem ensues.

Katarina Bishop has worn a lot of labels in her short life. Friend. Niece. Daughter. Thief. But for the last two months she’s simply been known as the girl who ran the crew that robbed the greatest museum in the world. That’s why Kat isn’t surprised when she’s asked to steal the infamous Cleopatra Emerald so it can be returned to its rightful owners.

There are only three problems. First, the gem hasn’t been seen in public in thirty years. Second, since the fall of the Egyptian empire and the suicide of Cleopatra, no one who holds the emerald keeps it for long, and in Kat’s world, history almost always repeats itself. But it’s the third problem that makes Kat’s crew the most nervous and that is simply… the emerald is cursed.

Double Crossed

Just as brilliant as book 1, Uncommon Criminals was followed by a novella, Double Crossed, that linked the Heist Society world with Ally Carter’s Gallagher Girls series.

Macey McHenry—Glamorous society girl or spy-in-training? W.W. Hale V—Heir to an American dynasty or master thief?

There are two sides to every coin. Whether these two can work together is a tossup.

When Macey and Hale meet at a society gala, the party takes a dangerous turn. Suddenly they’re at the center of a hostage situation, and it’s up to them to stop the thugs from becoming hostile. Will Macey’s spy skills and Hale’s con-man ways be enough to outsmart a ruthless gang? Or will they have to seek out the ultimate inside girl to help?

Perfect Scoundrels

Book Three Perfect Scoundrels. Not sure why, but I was always surprised that this series could get better. But it did. In Perfect Scoundrels, the third book, Kat is risking it all to help Hale. Gorgeous, rich, clever and funny Hale, who, if you’ve read the other books by now, you have fallen madly in love with.

When Hale unexpectedly inherits his grandmother’s billion dollar corporation, he quickly learns that there’s no place for Kat and their old heists in his new role. But Kat won’t let him go that easily, especially after she gets tipped off that his grandmother’s will might have been altered in an elaborate con to steal the company’s fortune.

If you loved the movie Ocean’s Eleven or books about mystery with clever plots then this is the series for you.

Right now, Ally Carter has left the series, which means there could be a fourth book. YAY!! But that might be a while. In the mean time, check out Ally Carter’s latest book All Fall Down in a new series called Embassy Row.
